Eid gift money: how to prepare envelopes for children

Forest-green and ivory paper envelopes with a card and gold ribbon

In families that give money at Eid, an envelope with the child’s name makes it easy to hand over the gift in person. Make the list, set the budget and write the notes the day before. That leaves less to do on Eid.

Set a budget before filling the envelopes

Write down the names, including children who won’t be there. With €30 for six children, for example, you can prepare six envelopes with €5 each. This is a budgeting example. Each family can choose what suits its budget and habits. If several adults are contributing, agree on how to share the cost.

Choose a format and write a personal note

Try one envelope with the card and gift you plan to include. Make sure it closes easily. A plain envelope with the name outside and a note inside is enough. If two children share a name, add an initial on the back. For a young child, give the envelope to their parent if that is easier.

Hand out the envelopes discreetly

Keep the envelopes sealed and hand them out as guests arrive or leave. Avoid writing the amounts on the outside. Set aside any envelopes for later so they don’t go home with the wrong person.

What can you put in an envelope without giving money?

A note, a drawing or an invitation to do something together is enough. If you prefer to give a physical gift, start with what the child enjoys.
